Troop registered for Merit Badge Challenge

The Troop has been registered for Merit Badge Challenge (thank you Mr. Zack). An e-mail was sent out to those with Scouts signed up for Merit Badge Challenge 2016. If you didn’t receive an email and were expecting to, please contact Mr Zack to get registered.

For those that received an email, please book all three Saturdays mornings (January 30, February 6 and February 20, 2016, and Snow Date February 27) into your family calendar to ensure that your Scout will be available. Most, if not all of the Merit Badges have pre-work that should be done PRIOR to the 1/30 date. The below merit badges have more significant requirements that will need to be addressed/started soon. Those with a 90 day requirement means that this piece will need to be started within the next few weeks. The pre-work information is attached. Boys can either get a merit badge booklet out of our closet (if available) OR look them up on-line (meritbadge.org) to figure out what they need to work on ahead of time. Boys will be reminded of all this information in upcoming Troop meetings.

  • Merit Badges with significant requirements
    • Family Life – 90 days
    • Personal Management – 90 days
    • Citizenship – council meetings and other things that will need to be planned out in advance

If Scouts have ANY questions, they should see Mr. Zack at the next Troop Meeting.

Fall Court of Honor is tonight. Please plan to attend with the entire family and celebrate your Scout’s achievements. Fall is our biggest Court of Honor for the entire year as it recognizes the boys for all their hard work at Summer Camp as well as all rank advancements since May. It will be held in the chapel of MSPC. Scouts should be in Dress Class A’s.

2 Service Opportunities

We have 2 service opportunities that needs Scouts and Scout Parents to help with.

  1. Madeira Directory
  2. OA Rootbeer Floats

Madeira Directory

As we gear up to create the next Madeira Directory, we need the boys and a few parents to step up to help with capturing the most current information from Madeira residence. Getting this data is not as simple as going down to City Hall and asking for it as they don’t have all the information that is in the Directory. One of the methods we have used successfully in the past is to have boys posted at Krogers to obtain updated information.

This is not a difficult task but it is a needed task. Having correct information in the Directory makes it more useful and thus we will likely sell more of them. This is currently our only fund raiser that funds the Troop for 2 years at a time. The money raised goes to things like buying/fixing tents, trailer maintenance costs, pots/pans, general troop/patrol camping equipment, Merit Badges, etc., etc.  If you attended the July 28th meeting run by Tom Cross, you understand that without this fund raiser we would not be able to have the quality Troop that your sons have enjoyed over the years.

We need 4 boys and a few parents to help out on Sunday September 13th and Sunday September 20th helping to verify information for the Madeira Directory at Kroger. The below link is how we will be capturing volunteers.

Volunteer Spot: http://vols.pt/o87fcP

There are 2 sessions on each day, from 1-3pm and 3-5pm, and each one needs 2 Scouts.

OA Rootbeer Floats

Below is important information about another volunteer opportunity. You do NOT need to be in the Order of the Arrow to help. This is not so much a sale but rather you will be giving out floats and hoping for tips that will go to camp improvements and camperships. This will count toward Scout and School requirements for service hours.

  • What: OA Root Beer Float “Sale”
  • Where: Madeira Kroger
  • When: Saturday Sept 12th  10:30 – 5:30
  • Why: The proceeds of the root beer float sale  help fund the Dan Beard Council Campership Fund  and Camp Improvements.
  • Who:  You!

Troop 209 will be staffing the Madeira Kroger to help the Order of the Arrow raise funds to make improvements at camp and to help disadvantaged youth participate in summer camp.   A&W is providing the root beer and red cream soda.  Kroger is providing the ice, cups and ice cream, we just need to make the floats!   Easy way to volunteer and help our community enjoy our fantastic camp.

I need 2 adults and 3 – 5 kids per shift.  The first shift from 10:30-12:00  will have about 30 minutes of set up.  The last shift will stop selling at 5:00 and can leave after everything is cleaned up. Shifts – 10:30-12:00, 12:00-2:00, 2:00-4:00, 4:00-5:30.

We’re using VolunteerSpot (the leading online Sign-up and reminder tool) to organize our upcoming Sign-ups.

Here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:

Important Parent Meeting

As I announced at the Summer Camp Family Dinner last Friday, I am having a meeting on July 28th at 7PM.

Here are the details:

WHO:  At least 1 parent from each Scout’s Family

WHAT:  Madeira Directory & Financial Impact Informational Meeting

WHERE:  Madeira Silverwood Presbyterian Church – Sanctuary

WHEN:  July 28, 2015 @ 7:00PM  (there is no Scout Meeting July 21 OR Aug 4)

WHY:  This meeting is to give the Boy Scout Parents of Troop 209 a brief history of the Madeira Directory and its impact on troop operating expenses.  In addition, this meeting will discuss the future and possible replacement of the Directory as our fundraiser.

I would greatly appreciate it if at least one parent could attend from each scout family.  This is a very important meeting and decisions made at this meeting will directly impact your scout.

See you Tuesday.

Sincerely,

Tom Cross, Troop 209 Committee Chair
